Innate blogs and news are back! Where did we go?

Our last blog was about 18months ago. At the time, Australia had three notable neocloud brands with clear outreach into the Australian community: Firmus, Sharon.AI, and ResetData. Each had some exposure to the research (university) sector, which, because we straddle both, we had varying exposure to. Since then, two and three of them have entrained themselves into a once-in-a-lifetime investment flywheel, becoming global neocloud brands with activities in the billions and recognition as unicorns. Ok, over the last week one made a step sideways. But we cannot doubt the collective are leading the charge to establish Australia as a token exporter, supplying the global AI supply chain. We will talk about this more in other posts.
Over this period, one direction we took was to entrain the Australian research sector into this new industry. Some things worked, and some things became important stepping stones. For those that worked, we’re getting close to announcements. We will also talk about this more in other posts.
Also over this period, we began investing time, resources, and effort in another direction. Sure, Australia is poised to supply AI data centres into the global AI supply chain, and it will (policies permitting) both capture a disproportionate market share and yield some wealth for the nation. More importantly, if we don't take the opportunity, all our consumer-level AI will be imported, leaving us at the whim of global markets and foreign interests. We dig crude oil out of the north west shelf, ship it to Singapore to then buy back the consumable diesel at global market prices, largely because we didn't sustain a competitive local refinery industry.
“The question to us back then, and increasingly central to state and federal governments right now, is: how do we also create industries and wealth higher up and lower down the AI value chain (i.e beyond AI data centres)?”
For those who have engaged with Innate Innovation’s strategy/subject-matter expertise, one thing we do is analyse your organisation or initiative against a stack of ten layers, from land to the value your staff or customers create from AI. We then contrast this versus the competition and/or potential partners. However, we can simplify these ten to three layers of value the AI supply chain…
| AI supply chain | Examples of what’s in it | Where does Australia stand? |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Enterprise, startups (scaling out new consumer, enterprise & industrial applications) & research | This layer is not solved anywhere! |
| AI datacentres | Land, energy, DC infrastructure & AI computers | Australia is on track to being a net exporter of tokens (this layer) - our job now is to sustain this. |
| AI technologies | AI Models, computers, chips & other AI specific technologies in the supply chain | For a host of systemic reasons, we do not have a strong IP base or engineering headcount in the country at this level. |
Hence, in early to mid 2025 we took a bit of a pivot. Our goal became to understand the commercials, technologies, and social dynamics needed to develop and scale applications (enterprise and startups, given we already know the value and pathway for research), and AI technologies (foundation models, model specialisation, novel computer technology, and so on). Both of these pointed to three distinct priorities:
- develop a portfolio of startup activities across the supply chain,
- seek out partners/clients actively and similarly hunting for the enterprise strategy,
- become extremely proficient at AI tooling to solve client, our own and enterprise needs
That is, we stopped blogging to spend time developing competency and practice instead. We believe we’ve come out the other side. 18months on, we have ticks across these three priorities. Sure, there has been plenty of sideways and backwards steps. However, the eventual step forward lands metres ahead, on solid ground and with that sense of strength and eagerness for what’s next.
Case in point: this blog is on the new Innate Innovation website, no longer hosted by a SaaS-era website builder, but instead is an AI-native website created within a family of software common across client, portfolio, and our own needs. We're consciously shifting where we seek efficiency, multiply value, and take risks. More on this in another post!
The new Innate Innovation website - a transition away from a traditional web hosting SaaS to leveraging a stack of AI-native software developed with AI tools.
You can now expect a rekindled regular cadence in news, case studies and thought leadership.
